Health & Safety / Industrial Hygiene Services

With capabilities that have grown throughout the years, we are pleased to offer numerous primary services delivered by world-class staff, including industrial hygiene assessments, safety assessments, exposure monitoring, chemical safety, noise dosimetry and survey, and hazardous building material inspections for asbestos, lead, PCBs, and mercury. In addition, the group provides abatement design, training, and indoor air quality investigations, including fungal evaluations.

PBS brings its architectural and environmental science background to evaluating and remediating environmental and occupational health problems in the public and private sector. Our Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH), inspectors, and scientists have the skill and experience to provide professional insight to health and safety challenges in the built environment. Services include asbestos inspection, abatement specification and monitoring; indoor air quality services; lead risk assessments and abatement design; mold inspection and abatement design; radon design; noise surveys, and more.

Indoor Air Quality and Mold

PBS has been performing mold investigations, remediation planning and oversight for more than three decades. Our architectural roots and enormous amount of renovation related hazardous materials projects have exposed us to a large variety of water intrusion issues. Additionally, as mold issues have come to the forefront of concern in the past several years, PBS has responded by continually educating and training staff to be ready to evaluate and remedy mold-related issues. PBS has performed mold investigations and performed remediation planning and oversight in high and low-rise commercial buildings, historic buildings, hospitals, childcare facilities, schools (preschool, elementary, middle, high school and higher education facilities), residences, as well as multi-family housing facilities.

Asbestos Sampling, Abatement Design, and Management

PBS’ environmental inspectors conduct surveys and sampling of suspected asbestos containing materials (ACM) in universities, K-12 schools, medical facilities, commercial, industrial, and government buildings. Properties are diverse in type and function, including services for airports, transportation structures, railroads, power plants, manufacturing facilities, residential complexes, office and retail facilities, and more. Our surveys are compliant with the requirements of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), and other state and federal regulations. Samples are analyzed by an accredited laboratory and can be used to develop project-specific specifications for remedial actions or complete abatement.

Lead-Based Paint Assessments, Abatement Design, and Management

PBS has the capability to test a variety of materials for the presence of lead, including surface dust, paint, soil, and water. Our inspectors and risk assessors conduct lead-based paint risk assessments using bulk sampling and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology in compliance with state, local, federal, and other regulatory agencies relevant to each project. These samples are sent to accredited laboratories for analysis, and the data used to provide project-specific specifications for remedial actions or complete abatement.

Construction Monitoring

PBS understands that capable and rigorous inspection and monitoring are the key to ensuring a quality construction project. Our services go beyond technical and material knowledge to incorporate solid reasoning, judgement, and collaborative communication. Our team provides construction inspection, monitoring, and quality control services for a wide variety of project types, including transportation, infrastructure, utilities, environmental, site development, and building projects.

Exposure Monitoring / Occupational Health and Safety

Assisting clients with employee health and safety is our specialty. PBS supports the health of federal and state agencies, schools, hospitals, airports, and private workforces by monitoring and tracking
wide range of potential exposures involving all types of workplace contaminants in a supportive and accurate manner.

Chemical Safety

PBS analyzes the dangers and risks of stored substances, referencing the appropriate MSDS files and categorizing substances appropriately, create rules for storage and file protection, and communicate proper information to facility workers.

Noise Dosimetry and Survey

Our industrial hygienists can conduct noise surveys and worker noise dosimetry to determine areas and equipment where workers may be exposed to hazardous levels of noise. Our goal is to identify significant sources of noise exposure, determine proper hearing protection, and outline how safety conditions can be improved through administrative measures, layout modifications, or personal protective equipment (PPE).
