Environmental Business Journal Recognizes PBS for Business Achievement

PBS News & Updates

Each year Environmental Business Journal recognizes outstanding business performance in the environmental industry with their EBJ Business Achievement Awards. Now in its 15th year, the organization has awarded its Gold Business Achievement Award in the category of Small Firms to PBS Engineering and Environmental (PBS).

EBI Business Award

At the end of the firm’s current fiscal year, PBS’ 34th, the company achieved significant growth and profitability milestones, which marked their best year to date. The firm’s management team and staff achieved these business targets at a time of significant changes to the company, which included acquisition, organic growth, and initiation of a new office location.

On April 1, 2016, PBS completed the acquisition of HDJ Design Group, PLLC. The acquisition of an established engineering practice in a regional market with complementary services led to significant growth for PBS. The acquisition immediately grew the firm’s employee count by over 50% from 120 employees to 185. Following the acquisition and due in large part to the expanded regional full service capabilities, PBS was able to add an additional 20 staff (another 10% organic increase) through the end of 2016.

In October 2016, PBS added a 10th office location (2nd in Puget Sound) to establish an engineering practice in the Seattle region to bring all PBS services to the Seattle market.

PBS debuted on the ENR Top 500 Design Firms for the first time in the company’s history. Current backlog is at historic high levels with a well-diversified (public and private) client base throughout the PBS geography.

EBJ logoPBS was recognized by EBJ for the significant positive effect of this successful acquisition, integration of two regional organizations, and growth amidst an economic recovery which heavily impacted the engineering design industry.

PBS also received an additional award from EBJ, who recognized the firm’s efforts in supporting environmental water quality (more information here).

In October-December 2016, EBJ solicited industry, government, non-profits, and the broader climate change community for nominations. Final awards were determined by a committee of EBJ staff and editorial advisory board members.

The 2016 EBJ awards are presented special ceremony at the Environmental Industry Summit XV in San Diego, California on March 22, 2017. The Environmental Industry Summit is an annual three-day executive retreat hosted by EBI Inc.
